Cookie House Tour

The House Tour I did for Cookie Magazine is now up. Joanna, who did the interview a while back is just as easy and fun to talk to as you'd think. (Maybe a bit too easy to talk to judging from the interview ;)

There are a few more pictures from that set right here, if you're interested.

postcards in progress

I found this while cleaning up my studio and thought it would make a nice Friday Archives contribution. Back in 2000 my two friends (Shannon and Jason-fellow painters) and I had this idea to send painted postcards between the three of us, each one adding another layer to postcard we were receiving (painting on top of the last persons). It was fun and we did manage to maintain the idea for a bit. I'm really unsure of what ended the rounds....hmmmm. I think I'll call Shannon right now.

The above image was a copy I made of one of mine before it went back in the mail. You can see a bit of the previous persons image behind and I know it played a big role in how I laid out this painting. I always thought if I made a graphic novel, this is the asthetic feel it'd have.

stamping

Yesterday, for my pretend job I had to design some stationary notes. I went with some simple organic shapes when carving the stamps and got a little crazy with the actual stamping, but it can get addicting (and messy!).

Speaking of the likes, this book looks good.

anniversary of sorts

Yesterday Tony and I celebrated a decade of being together. It's the one we count, more so than our wedding one. Our history actually goes back seventeen years ago when we were best friends as teenagers, both secretly in love with the other but afraid to tell the other. Well, ten years ago is when we finally admitted it :).

The above photo is of us, maybe 7 years ago? Crappy photo but fun times.
Happy weekend everyone!

6 Things I Like Today

6 Things I Like Today:

1. Tony. I didn't actually get to see him much today, but I really like him.
2. Enzo's foot is finally all healed up so today we sailed the walnut sailboats which really ended up being lots of jumping and splashing in the puddle.
3. My new dress. It's not a style I would normally love, but it's gauzy, soft, grey, and feels like I'm wearing a nightgown.
4. Working on my ongoing project, which hopefully I'll have something to show for-soon(ish). I am so lucky Enzo still naps which allows me studio time.
5. Doing a picnic dinner at the park, in our favorite spot.
6. These pretty little flowers Enzo picked for me there.

I was tagged by the creative and talented fliss, thanks so much!
I tag : Anne, Cara, Maud, Heidi and Veja Cecelia (only if you want to play along).

the rescuers

This afternoon we discovered an orphaned baby opossum in our backyard. With bravery and courage I caught him and then Enzo and I delivered him to the wildlife shelter right before they closed for the day. (The top picture is of the woman who worked there, giving Enz one last look.) We then walked the shoreline nearby and threw back the bait fish the local fisherman had left on the shore, flopping and gasping. Well, not this one, he was dead.

Cherry Tart, Quiche Recipies

Yesterday afternoon, I was in a cooking kind of mood. I made the above cherry tart, quiche, fresh salsa, veggie sloppie joe's and a fruit salad. In response to my friend Breaker's pleas, I've decided I will try to post a tried and true recipe, maybe monthly.

Let's start with that cherry tart/pie thing. So easy and so impressive! And of course, tasty. I had fresh cherries so I found a recipe in a magazine and altered it to what I had on hand. I de-seeded and halved about 2 cups of fresh cherries, mixed them in a bowl with 1/8 cup of sugar and 1/2 tablespoon of cornstarch. I then spread them out onto the center of a ready-made pie crust (ripped the edges off a bit for a more "rustic" look), folded them up, spread some egg wash on the dough and sprinkled with sugar. Put back into the frig for about 10 minutes and then baked at 375 F for oh, maybe 45 minutes in my toaster oven.

But here is the Quiche recipe that friends have requested after having eaten.

2 Pre-made pie crusts
1 Med. Vidalia Onion, sliced(or any onion)
1 clove minced garlic
1 Tablespoon Sugar
1/2 Cup Parmesean Cheese, grated
5 Eggs
2 Cups Milk (I use whole)
1/4 Cup Mayo
Salt & Pepper

1) Cook your pie crust a bit accourding to instructions.
2)In a medium heat pan, sautee onion and garlic. Season with S & P and when starting to get soft, add about a tablespoon of sugar, making them nice and caramelized.
3) In a blender combine eggs, milk, mayo S & P.
4)Disperse caramelized onions between the 2 pie crusts. Sprinkle with grated cheese and finish by pouring the egg mixture from the blender between the pies.
5) Cook at 350 F for about 40 minutes-1 hour.

This is such a great basic recipe, given to me from my cousin the chef. Instead of onion & parm I've done mushrooms and swiss as well as chedder & broccoli. I always serve it with a balsamic dressing-based salad as the tartness of the dressing goes so well with the creaminess of the quiche. Enjoy!

p.s. Let me know if you try it :)

week in review :)

Tuesday: Went to the Italian Bakery we love for some yummy treats and fresh bread.
Discovered a warehouse that sells all the county school's old supplies. Both are only about a mile away from my house!
Wednesday: Celebrated my sisters birthday-Enzo always shares the candle blowing responsibilty.
Thursday: Went to a movie with the boys.
Friday: Made some cherry/lemon "layered" slushies. The layering didn't do so well, but it was fun and they were good.

Hope everyone has a nice holiday/weekend.

The painting

So here is the painting* I referenced a few weeks back. Unfortunately I never got a good picture of it-I feel it's more crisp and painterly in real life, but oh well. The top picture is at my house and the bottom is the one Gretel took of it at the gallery. I also had a sculptural piece in the show but maybe I'll show that later.
I've always felt I'm horrible at explaining or describing my work but this is somewhat representative of my paintings. I love painting skin tones and tend to want them surrounded by a muted palette. Another commonality is a somewhat formal and traditional setting with a hint of the strange lurking about. (maybe not so much in this particular one, but in general)

I wanted to thank my wonderful friend Gretel so much for including me into this show. (As well as all the other things she has done for me). THANK YOU!

* That's not me in the painting.
